of course, they are in 60's threads. i've included a pants + skirt version for both, just b/c i like drawing clothes hurr... for the most part charles dresses in brown/tweed/images of mothballs-evoking shit like he does as a dude while erik is flashier and more modernly stylish (after all, he chooses to go around in a purple and red cape and helmet). charles' outfit on the left would be for lounging around at home and the right one would be for work (and somehow, reeling in the dudes). i based their faces on the actors, so chick erik came out a little severe haha

don't buy the "they're whatever race you want them to be!" bullshit, it would take a very generous mind to roll with them being anything other than caucasian (except for jade and jake maybe). i'm from the certain cultural experiences that go with being a certain ethnicity camp. i don't care much though, since i know it's easier to draw from your own experiences to create character stories and if you just happen to be a white American guy, that's what you're gonna do. the kids as diff races fan art showing up on tumblr is fun, although at the same time demonstrates how some people cannot fucking draw people of other races without resorting to stereotypical identifiers like slanted eyes and the same exact shade of brown skin color for every dark person. there are many light colored "dark" people and many big, even medium size eyed east asians. people of different races also have flat noses and very defined noses and prominent cheekbones and thin faces and wide faces and thin lips and plush lips, all within one race, just like white people can! holy shit. there are definitely certain trends within people's appearance + their race, but they are more subtle than lots of ppl portray them.

but i guess having race markers is useful when people have simplistic styles that cannot go into the detail i describe and where exaggerations would be favored, so everything i'm talking about is moot

near certain i'm never gonna finish this so gonna throw this up here. should've made the lineart thinner since i ended up wanting to do something detailed w/ the coloring

erik and charles from x-men first class from memory. the movie was alright, it was rather fun to watch but not memorable. i already loved magneto regardless of his silly costume but this movie just made me love him more :)

for me, watching the material's half the fun while exploring fanworks is the other. for fun below's the fandom interpretation of these two, where charles has the soul of mrs. hudson from bbc sherlock trapped in the body of the most kawaiiest of ukes and erik is the overprotective angsty touchy shark seme (also, bonus beast and alex UST. i don't know why beast looks like sonic here, sorry).

warning: possibly fugliest drawings of jude law ever. oops too late, it's just so fun to make him ugly and still (hopefully) recognizable. he has a very prominent butt forehead, ethan hawke kinda does too in the movie because he tries so hard to look downtrodden and determined. i have plenty of practice with butt foreheads because i am an experienced doodler of chow chows

practices for possible upcoming fan art of slashy nature. still kinda weirded out by drawing 3d (yes as opposed to drawing creepyass pictures of 2d) but i'll get over it

watched gattaca in bio class recently, LOVED IT. the aesthetics definitely appealed to me (hehe), as did the concept of genoism, impersonation hijinks, and the bittersweetness of the ending. uma thurman and jude law looked great. it was surprising to see jude law with more meat on his bones than usual, i am used to seeing his cheekbones but he looked round-ish in this movie, or maybe it was the cut of the suits or the youngness that made him look more robust? he looked pretty skinny in the talented mr. ripley and wilde, two other past movies made around the time of gattaca i watched recently with him in it. my sister said he looked like a fat baby in gattaca lmfao, i just thought he looked really cutely round. he looked particularly great in wilde imo but that movie was crap, boring from beginning to end and putting way too much focus on oscar wilde's sex life to the detriment of his value as a writer and his impact on society. bosie was presented as a seductive devil in typical hollywood fashion where a few traits are taken and exaggerated to extreme, unbelievable proportions

anyway back to gattaca:

i found ethan hawke to be strangely startlingly unattractive and wooden in his performance in gattaca, cringed at his obviously-reading-from-a-script narration sometimes but the movie didn't suffer too much. i also found uma thurman's character to be an uncompelling generic hollywood love interest and i was really mixed regarding her interaction with vincent. on one hand, the conflict b/w vincent's love for her and his need to guard his identity was interesting, on the other we didn't really know anything about her motivations or background :( at least she looked hawt and the concept of genoism played out was really interesting

i don't know anything about thor except what i've read from wikipedia and the 2011 thor movie, which i recently watched. with dc, i find the comics far more enjoyable than the movies but for marvel i can't be assed to seek out the comic versions (partly because i find many of the main lineup designs are terribly ugly and overly fussy. like hawkeye, scarlet witch, and magneto. i'm used to skintight bodysuits and capes in horrendous colors, but not... m-shaped head coverings, red and purple bucket helmets, or head condoms with cateye lenses. the movies do excellent jobs at making them simpler and more appealing, to me anyway) thus, i hope my one viewing of the thor movie will excuse me to draw lady loki who only appeared in the comics. i just like her design

the criteria here's one eyed, cropped light hair, flaming giant fucking huge eyebrows, rough looking, shaves sometimes. pretty specific but holy shit so many possibilities... personally i am leaning towards the blocky face at the top but if a character design doesn't look distinctive enough for my tastes (aka doesn't have a shit ton of jewelry or flashy clothes going on) then i am automatically dissatisfied

the thing is that he is actually quite an intellectual and used to be a leaner, bookish type until some shit happened that i have not thought out in detail yet. his eye was put out by somebody punching his right glasses lens so hard that shards pretty much skewered his eye right through. now he has an extreme squick about putting stuff in front of his eye and this includes hair, glasses, and eyepatches. he has real bad myopia though so he has to wear a soft contact, which for some reason doesn't bother him. for now he is a serious and sincere logical type, i'll flesh him out more once i think of his personality aside from how he's connected w/ his boss. maybe he appears serious but shares a lot of in-jokes w/ his boss or something...

his boss prefers him with facial hair because she likes rubbing her face against it and being reminded that her facial nerves can feel at least a little (TINY WEIRD TIDBIT).

i also thought about making this character a tough lady and tbh i am still not really decided

the villain. the original backstory is that "he" was a girl who started presenting as male in order to ascend the ranks of some shady organization she joined even though she didn't personally identify as one. the farthest she's gone to become male is to get regular voice therapy and some facial surgery, which didn't turn out as well as she planned and permanently messed up her facial muscles so she cannot make many expressions. this makes her look perpetually serene, even in the most pressing of situations, which scares the living daylights out of most of the people around her and makes her seem more intimidating. she is actually quite playful and joking, but any hints of this combined w/ her face make her seem really creepy. her background is tragic but she remains a very optimistic person

her overall figure is still a woman's so she tries to hide that by wearing a coat with hugeass lapels and shoulderpads (covering her shoulders) and baggy pants

she also has a relationship w/ her bodyguard whose design i have not finalized

these three belong to a renowned law enforcement family, the lady is the current designated matriarch and head of police. she wears like ten family heirlooms on her person at all times (the asian-y overcoat is one of them). typical authoritative, knowledgeable, firm but merciful boss. she is somewhat infuriating in that when she is asked a question, she prefers to guide the asker towards the answer rather than tell them directly. while she is more apt to consider different possibilities than her brother, she does not change her beliefs as easily

the dude on the left is her brother, who is currently a student and an intern in her unit but he is so used to the trade that the employees think of him as a colleague. he is impatient and gets easily annoyed and he hates being told what to do by people he doesn't respect. while he is experienced, he grew up in the lap of privilege and was spoiled by his parents, so he can be inappropriately condescending and naive. he is also tall and wiry as fuck but has a baby face. he respects his sister a lot (who's quite a bit older than him). originally, he was going to have a vast collection of weirdass jackets with fish on them but i wonder if i've already got enough characters w/ peculiarities about their clothing. considering the next character, perhaps it is a running trait in their family

the dude on the right is their cousin who is a black sheep in the family and generally thought of as not right in the head. he is overly suspicious of people and keeps to himself, and he always wears a bunny-related piece of clothing on his person for some reason his family members don't understand, but probably had to do with an incident with his pet bunny during his childhood (it was his only childhood friend :'( ). he has to buy his bunny shirts, bunny sweaters, and bunny pajamas from stores for girls and he doesn't care if he's seen shopping in them although he does get mad when people point out he's wearing sweaters for girls. he will buy any item of clothing with a bunny on it no matter how embarrassing the slogan or picture on it (see image of him wearing some shitty francophile forever21-level trendy sweater. he is basically a vehicle for my love of bunny-related clothing sob). nevertheless, like the rest of his family, he is quite adept at combat

yes i do believe i've posted this character before. i decided to go even further with the combat in ridiculously impractical sexy undergarments theme and gave her a lace bedjacket

character from here and here in her daily life as an engineering professor. she loves collecting vintage wear but her fashion sense is by normal convention completely cracked out. she doesn't like showing skin much, likes covering up her neck and loose/billowing silhouettes. her students probably have a facebook group-equivalent thing called "i attend professor _____'s classes just to see what sort of crazy shit she'll wear today." it is unknown how she gets away with wearing impractical clothes when doing labs or working with machines which she probably has to do everyday, i will probs have to figure that out

i think about my characters' fashion sense to the complete detriment of personality and other life details. it's just too fun
